Playing career
Logan Cooley began his career with the U.S. national under-18 team. He originally committed to the University of Notre Dame before switching to the University of Minnesota. During his freshman season with Minnesota in 2022–23, he put up 22 goals and 38 assists for 60 points over 39 games. In the lead-up to the 2022 NHL draft, scouting services ranked him anywhere from second to fifth among available prospects. The Arizona Coyotes picked him third overall. Cooley said in May 2023 that he planned to return to Minnesota for another season, but on July 27, 2023, he signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Coyotes. He stood out in training camp and made the opening-night roster, making his NHL debut in a 4–3 shootout win over the New Jersey Devils. In that game, he recorded two assists, one of which set up Nick Schmaltz for the tying goal. He scored his first NHL goal on November 1 in a 4–3 loss to the Anaheim Ducks, beating goalie Lukáš Dostál. After the 2023–24 season, the Coyotes franchise was shut down and its assets were moved to the expansion Utah Hockey Club, making Cooley a member of that team. On October 29, 2025, he signed an eight-year contract extension with Utah worth an average of $10 million per year, starting with the 2026–27 season. On November 25, he posted a career-best four goals and five points in a 5–1 win over the Vegas Golden Knights, becoming the first player in Mammoth history to score four times in a single game. In the 2026 Stanley Cup playoffs, Cooley scored the first playoff goal in Mammoth history late in the first period of Game 1 against the Golden Knights, off a cross-ice pass from Nate Schmidt.
Personal life
Hailing from West Mifflin, a borough in the greater Pittsburgh area, Logan Cooley became the highest-drafted player from the region when he was selected third overall in the 2022 NHL entry draft, topping previous first-round picks J. T. Miller and R. J. Umberger. Though he began his hockey journey in Sidney Crosby's Little Penguins program, Cooley has said he grew up rooting for the Washington Capitals and Alexander Ovechkin. His cousin, L.J. Mooney, was chosen in the fourth round (113th overall) of the 2025 draft and has committed to play college hockey at Minnesota.
