Playing career

McBain was selected in the third round, 63rd overall, of the 2006 NHL entry draft by the Carolina Hurricanes. He signed a three-year, $1.8 million entry-level contract with the Hurricanes on March 26, 2009. For the 2010–11 season, he switched from jersey number 28 to number 4. That season he was chosen to participate in the 2011 NHL All-Star Game as a replacement for Jordan Eberle, joining teammates Eric Staal, Jeff Skinner, and Cam Ward. On May 21, 2012, Carolina announced a two-year contract extension worth $3.6 million after McBain led all Hurricanes defensemen with 19 assists and 27 points. The contract paid $1.7 million in 2012–13 and $1.9 million in 2013–14. General Manager Jim Rutherford stated that McBain had established himself as an NHL defenseman who moves the puck well and contributes offensively, especially on the power play. During the 2012–13 NHL lockout, McBain signed a temporary contract with Finnish club Lahti Pelicans of the SM-liiga on November 2, 2012, playing seven games and recording one assist before returning for the shortened NHL season. On June 30, 2013, during the 2013 NHL entry draft, he was traded to the Buffalo Sabres along with Carolina's second-round pick for defenseman Andrej Sekera. After one season, the Sabres declined to offer him a contract extension. As a free agent, he attended Arizona Coyotes training camp on a tryout but was released unsigned. On October 31, 2014, he agreed to a professional try-out contract with the Manchester Monarchs of the AHL. After six games, he signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Los Angeles Kings on November 11, 2014, wearing number 5.
