The project began as a side venture for the Clarks, who had previously played together in the experimental band Training for Utopia. Demon Hunter first appeared on the compilation *This Is Solid State Vol. 3* in February 2002 with a demo of "Through the Black." Their self-titled debut album followed in October 2002 on Solid State Records, with the brothers writing and performing most of the instruments and hiring Jesse Sprinkle for drums. Early on, the band obscured members' identities in photos and press, only revealing names during their first tour with Extol and The Agony Scene, after adding Sprinkle, bassist Jon Dunn, and guitarist Kris McCaddon.
Their second album, *Summer of Darkness*, arrived in May 2004 and brought secular attention. The video for "Not Ready to Die" aired on MTV2's *Headbangers Ball*, and "My Heartstrings Come Undone" appeared on the *Resident Evil: Apocalypse* soundtrack. The band's only 2006 tour featured Zao, Becoming the Archetype, August Burns Red, and Spoken. A re-release of *The Triptych* in October 2006 added a DVD and four extra tracks. The fourth album, *Storm the Gates of Hell*, was released in November 2007, with "Fading Away" as its first single and video.
