Dottie's Magic Pockets

First LGBT children's programming with a lesbian household.

Dottie's Magic Pockets is a live-action musical puppet series for children, created by Tammy Stoner. The show follows Dottie and her magical puppet friends as they learn, sing, and dance. It is recognized as the first children's program to feature LGBT characters, designed to be inclusive of gay, single-parent, adopted, and traditional families. The series' DVD was released in September 2007. In March 2008, actor Jen Plante, who plays Dottie, performed on an R Family Vacations cruise to the Mexican Riviera. This marked the first time the main character of a children's show set in a lesbian household entertained LGBT families and their friends.

Key puppet characters include James the Flower, Uncanny the Singing Can, Matilda the Mouse, and Randal the Beaver. Other characters appear through animation and claymation, many of whom have two mothers or two fathers. The live-action format is similar to shows like Yo Gabba Gabba, Sesame Street, and Pee Wee's Playhouse. A follow-up CD, The Super, Secret Seashell Cave, was released in December 2009. This 55-minute sing-along adventure features Dottie, James, Uncanny, Matilda, and Randal, with 16 original songs by Allyson Newman. Both the DVD and CD were produced by Pink Pea LLC.

The DVD screened at Outfest 2008 and at over a dozen international festivals, including the 2009 London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival, the Inside Out Film and Video Festival, and the Melbourne Queer Film Festival. In 2010, Plante performed as Dottie at the Frameline Film Festival and the Austin Gay Lesbian Film Festival. The DVD and CD have been added to dozens of library collections in both Canada and the United States.
