New Zoo Revue
A musical comedy series teaching cooperation through puppet characters.
From 1972 to 1977, the American children's series New Zoo Revue aired in first-run syndication as a half-hour musical comedy. Its 196 episodes aimed to teach cooperation and practical life skills, tackling subjects like patience, courtesy, bragging, and moving away. The show was hosted by real-life spouses Douglas Momary and Emily Josephine Peden, who played Doug and Emmy Jo. The main cast also included full-body puppet characters: Freddie the Frog, Henrietta Hippo, and Charlie the Owl. Momary wrote over 600 songs for the series. The program earned recommendations and awards from the National Education Association and the National School Board Association.

Characters
Doug, portrayed by Doug Momary, is a human character who counts Freddie, Charlie, and Henrietta among his friends. His assistant is Emmy Jo, played by Emily Peden. Freddie the Frog, performed by Yanco Inone and occasionally Scutter McKay with voice work by Joni Robbins (and Joan Gerber for one episode), is a cheerful and slightly naive frog. Despite being the same size as the other adult-sized characters, Freddie is sometimes depicted as a school-aged child.
Charlie the Owl, performed by Sharon Baird and voiced first by Bob Holt then Bill Callaway (with Larry D. Mann for one episode), is a stern, all-knowing owl residing in a tall tree that has an elevator. He works as a scientist and inventor and occasionally awards "One-Bell Prizes," a playful nod to the Nobel Prize. Henrietta Hippo, performed by Larri Thomas and occasionally Jon Linton with voice by Hazel Shermet, is a shy, refined hippopotamus who wears a tutu and has a Southern Belle manner.
Mr. Dingle, played by Chuck Woolery in the first season and later by Walker Edmiston, is a kind elderly postman who also runs a shop and serves as a jack-of-all-trades. Mrs. Goodbody, played by Fran Ryan, is a curious neighbor who drops by now and then and wrote an advice column for The All-New Zoo Gazette. Composer Henry Mancini made a cameo. Actor Jim Backus, famous for Mr. Magoo and Gilligan's Island, also appeared.
Jesse White, best remembered as the original Maytag repairman, was a guest on several episodes. June Lockhart, known for Lassie, Lost in Space, and Petticoat Junction, guest-starred in the episode "Shyness" as Penelope Potter, a very timid woman. Richard Dawson, recognized for Hogan's Heroes, Match Game, and Family Feud, appeared in the "Time Travel" episode as a medieval knight. Jo Anne Worley, noted for Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In, played talk show host Vanessa Gramcracker.
