History
Matron Thorn approached Ascaris about forming a project together after they had toured together in different bands, citing a chemistry onstage that suggested more to their encounter. They deliberately aimed for a sound distinct from their previous projects, seeking to provide an honest reflection of human existence through their mirrors to the other side. Their first EP, Oracle of Infinite Despair, was released independently in 2011 and distributed only among close friends and a small network of colleagues. Luciano Gaglio of I, Void Hanger Records became aware of the EP and approached the band, leading to the release of their first full-length album De Masticatione Mortuorum in Tumulis on October 16, 2012, which included the three songs from the EP. The album was named the 15th best metal album of 2012 by Kim Kelly in her MetalSucks column. Their second full-length album, Omen Ex Simulcra, was released on November 29, 2013 through Debemur Morti Productions and received positive reviews from Pitchfork, Metal Injection, Invisible Oranges, and CVLT Nation. On January 25, 2014 the band performed at Saint Vitus bar in Brooklyn, New York with Oak, Artificial Brain, and Disparish; a review noted their use of tribal-ish makeup, a mask worn by vocalist Ascaris, Matron Thorn playing a hollow-bodied jazz guitar, and the absence of a live drummer in favor of a drum machine.
Musical style and influences
Ævangelist blends black and death metal with experimental, avant-garde touches. Critics highlight their focus on a terrifying, nightmarish atmosphere, achieved partly through saxophones, violins, and cellos. Matron Thorn described the music and lyrics as transmitting an esoteric dark frequency that defies rational explanation yet is always carried within. The band also challenges expectations around gender norms, corpse paint, and what instruments are acceptable.
