Band history

Iceburn started out playing jazzcore, a mix of hardcore punk and metal's speed and energy with the complexity of jazz and progressive rock. In their early years, they were a standard power trio with guitar, bass, and drums. In 1996, they released Meditavolutions, a 70-minute continuous piece built as a musical palindrome. Around that time, the band started calling itself the Iceburn Collective to show how its membership kept changing. The group grew to include a saxophonist, a conga drummer, and a second guitarist. Critic Bret Love said the seven-piece band's sound flows so smoothly that it might take a few songs to realize you've never heard anything like it. Over time, the band added more improvisation. By the time they split up around 2000, Iceburn had become a fully improvised avant-garde jazz group, using saxophone and other woodwinds. After the band ended, Densley worked with Greg Anderson on a project called Ascend. Most Iceburn albums had cover art by Rich Jacobs from California. The band got back together for one show in February 2007, celebrating the 18th anniversary of Slug Mag, a local arts magazine that had long supported Iceburn and Densley's music.
