History
Dance Club Massacre began in Lansing, Illinois in 2004 as a duo of Nick Seger and Kurt Latos, later acquiring a full lineup of friends, many of whom were college students. Their first demo, simply titled Demo, was recorded in early 2005 at Blam Recording in Chicago with producer Eric Butkus. It contained seven tracks, and 150 hand-pressed copies were sold at shows and through their Myspace profile. After the demo's release, Matt Hynek replaced Kurt Latos as keyboardist. By April 2006, all demo copies had sold out, prompting the band to record their debut full-length album, Feast of the Blood Monsters, with the same engineer. Six of the seven demo tracks were re-recorded for the album, which was self-released in a run of 1,100 copies with real packaging, sold at local indie record stores, shows, and on Interpunk. The album remained in Interpunk's top 50 items since its release. The band played at the 2006 Warped Tour and were subsequently noticed by Black Market Activities, which re-issued the debut album through Black Market and Metal Blade with heightened production and different cover art. In 2008, they traveled to Syracuse, New York to record their second album, Circle of Death, with Jason Randall at More Sound Studios. Since 2009, the band has been largely inactive; their Facebook page is updated occasionally with rehearsal photos, but they have not played a show since 2009, though they have not denied the possibility of a reunion.
Musical style, influences and concept
Dance Club Massacre is primarily recognized as a deathcore band, but their music incorporates experimental metal, black metal, death metal, grindcore, math rock, post-hardcore, and thrash metal. Their experimental style is influenced by groups such as Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth, An Albatross, The Locust, Daughters, Converge, Horse the Band, Fantomas, Pig Destroyer, and Between the Buried and Me, as well as indie rock. Lyrical themes focus on partying, girls, alcohol, and enjoying life, rather than the morbid or aggressive subjects typical of extreme metal.
