Background

Swart's journey began far from the pitch, hiding with his father during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands from 1940 to 1945. While nearly 75 percent of the Dutch Jewish population perished in those years, Swart survived and eventually found his way to Ajax as a winger starting in 1956. He became the club's most capped player with 603 official matches. His tenure culminated in an unprecedented treble of European Cup titles in 1971, 1972, and 1973. These victories marked the peak of his career, showcasing a player who endured personal tragedy to lead his team on the world's biggest stage. He retired immediately following this golden era, honored with a farewell match that celebrated his singular loyalty and record-setting service.
