Background

Cruyff joined the Ajax youth system on his tenth birthday after coach Jany van der Veen noticed his talent without a formal trial. Initially preferring baseball, he focused solely on football by age fifteen. His professional debut came on 15 November 1964 in a 1–3 defeat against GVAV Groningen. Early struggles saw Ajax close to relegation under Vic Buckingham, leading to the dismissal of the manager and the hiring of Rinus Michels. Michels professionalized the club, enforcing iron discipline and three daily training sessions. He prohibited secondary jobs, turning part-time players like Cruyff—formerly a 'jack-of-all-trades' at a printing company—into full-time professionals. This era birthed the 'Total Football' philosophy, where Cruyff dropped deep or surged forward to confuse defenses, leading Ajax to three consecutive European Cups and an Intercontinental Cup.

Did You Know?

Early life

Johan Cruyff was born on 25 April 1947 in Amsterdam and grew up in the Betondorp neighborhood, just minutes from Ajax's De Meer Stadion. His father, a devoted Ajax fan, died of a heart attack in 1959, forcing his mother to work as a cleaner at Ajax. Cruyff's older brother Henny was initially considered more talented but lacked focus on football; the brothers later fell out after Henny accused their stepfather of being a former Waffen-SS member, an allegation unsupported by research. Cruyff anglicized his surname early in his career. He struggled academically, repeating two school years, and later speculated he had ADHD. His father's death drove him to earn money quickly for family security. He was shaped by Calvinism and occasionally experimented with spiritualism to contact his deceased father.

World Cup 1974

Before the 1974 World Cup, Cruyff negotiated bonuses and sponsorship deals with the Dutch federation. During training camp, he effectively acted as player-coach with Rinus Michels' approval, dictating tactics and lineup choices. He had goalkeeper Jan van Beveren sent home for defiance and installed Jan Jongbloed, valuing his ball-playing ability. Cruyff assigned midfielder Arie Haan the libero role. In the opening match, the Netherlands beat Uruguay 2–0. Against Sweden, Cruyff performed the "Cruyff Turn," a move already familiar in the Netherlands but new to the global audience. In the second group stage, he dominated Argentina, scoring twice and setting up another goal. The Netherlands then easily defeated East Germany before a physical match against Brazil, where Cruyff was denied from close range early on.

Euro 1976

Between 1974 and 1976, the Netherlands qualified for the four-team European Championship. Coach George Knobel submitted to Cruyff's dominance, leading PSV players Jan van Beveren and Willy van der Kuylen to retire from the national team. Before Euro 1976, Cruyff again negotiated bonuses and sponsorship contracts, overshadowing the tournament. The federation and Cruyff also clashed over the Chef d'équipe. The Dutch expected the match against Czechoslovakia to be a warm-up for a rematch with Germany, but the Czechs disrupted their rhythm and took an early lead, resulting in a clear defeat. Cruyff left before the third-place match to undergo knee surgery in Barcelona.
