Rafael van der Vaart

Rafael Ferdinand van der Vaart, born 11 February 1983 in Heemskerk, North Holland, is a retired Dutch attacking midfielder who later took up darts. He grew up on a caravan park belonging to Dutch Travellers, with a Dutch father and a Spanish mother from Chiclana de la Frontera. After learning the game at the trailer park and playing for local side De Kennemers, he joined the Ajax academy at age ten. Van der Vaart made his senior debut for Ajax at 17, and his playmaking soon drew comparisons to Johan Cruyff.

He was named Dutch Football Talent of the Year and became the first winner of the Golden Boy Award while at the club. His Ajax career was marked by injuries—including a serious knee injury in 2002 that required removal of his entire meniscus—but he still helped the team win league titles and a Dutch Cup. He was named captain in 2004 but was later stripped of the role after refusing to play out of position.

In 2005, Van der Vaart moved to Hamburger SV for €5.5 million, a transfer that surprised many, including Cruyff. He finished his first season as the club’s top scorer, helped them finish third in the Bundesliga, and won the 2005 UEFA Intertoto Cup. He then played for Real Madrid, Tottenham Hotspur, and returned to Hamburg in 2012. Later in his career, he had short spells in Spain and Denmark before retiring in 2018, returning briefly in 2019 for a testimonial match. Between 2001 and 2013, he earned 109 caps for the Netherlands, playing at three European Championships and two World Cups, including the 2010 final. In 2019, he began a darts career by joining the British Darts Organisation.
