Edgar Davids

Edgar Steven Davids (born 13 March 1973) is a Dutch former professional footballer who played as a defensive midfielder. Known as "The Pitbull" for his aggressive marking and hard tackling, he is widely considered one of the finest midfielders of his era. Davids began his career at Ajax, where he won multiple domestic and international trophies. He then moved to Italy, playing for AC Milan before a highly successful period at Juventus.

In 2004, he was loaned to Barcelona. Later, he played for Inter Milan and Tottenham Hotspur, then returned to Ajax. After two years hampered by injuries, he had a brief stint with Crystal Palace before retiring at age 37. In 2012, he became player-manager of English League Two side Barnet, leaving by mutual agreement in January 2014.

For the Netherlands, he earned 74 caps and scored six goals, appearing at the 1998 World Cup and three European Championships (1996, 2000, 2004). One of the most recognisable players of his generation, Davids was famous for his dreadlocked hair and protective goggles, worn due to glaucoma. In 2004, Pelé included him in the FIFA 100 list of the world's greatest living footballers as a midfielder. Davids was born in Paramaribo, Suriname, to an Afro-Surinamese family with Jewish heritage from his mother.

His family moved to the Netherlands when he was a baby. His cousin Lorenzo is also a footballer. Rejected twice by the club, Davids finally joined Ajax at age 12. He debuted for the first team on 6 September 1991 in a 5–1 home win over RKC Waalwijk.

He helped Ajax win three Eredivisie titles, the 1992 UEFA Cup, and the 1995 UEFA Champions League. In the 1996 Champions League final, he missed Ajax's first penalty in a shoot-out loss to Juventus. Ajax manager Louis van Gaal gave him the nickname "The Pitbull" for his fierce midfield play. In the 1996–97 season, Davids moved to AC Milan on a free transfer alongside teammate Michael Reiziger, benefiting from the Bosman ruling.

The defending champions had a poor season, changing managers twice and finishing 11th in Serie A. Davids broke his leg in a 1–0 loss at Perugia on 23 February 1997. After failing to regain his place, he joined Juventus in December 1997 for a reduced fee of 9 billion lire (£3 million). At Milan, teammate Alessandro Costacurta called him the "rotten apple" of the dressing room. At Juventus, Davids became a regular, initially on the left flank and later as a central defensive midfielder.

He formed a notable partnership with French playmaker Zinedine Zidane. Pundits considered him one of the best January transfers, and manager Marcello Lippi said Davids's new role was a key tactical change. Lippi called him "my one-man engine room." Davids helped Juventus win Serie A titles in 1998, 2002, and 2003, plus two Supercoppa Italiana and the UEFA Intertoto Cup.

He played in the 2003 Champions League final, losing to Milan on penalties, and also reached the 1998 final and the 1999 semi-final, as well as the 2002 Coppa Italia Final. After tensions with Lippi and competition for a starting spot in the 2003–04 season, Davids joined Barcelona on loan in January 2004. The club was mid-table and manager Frank Rijkaard under pressure. Davids sparked a resurgence, with Barcelona finishing second in La Liga.

His arrival is often cited as the catalyst for Barcelona's later dominance, including a league title the following season and a double in 2005–06. In summer 2004, Davids signed a three-year contract with Inter Milan. After Inter terminated his contract in August 2005, he moved to Tottenham Hotspur on a free transfer. He became an instant fan favourite, scoring his only goal in a 2–1 away win at Wigan Athletic.

He played for Spurs in the 2005–06 and 2006–07 seasons, with the club finishing fifth both times. Davids re-signed with Ajax on 28 January.
