Ronald Koeman

Ronald Koeman (born 21 March 1963) is a Dutch football manager and former player. His most recent role was managing the Netherlands national team. Although he played as a defender for most of his career, he scored more than 250 goals. Koeman could operate as either a defender or a midfielder, often taking the sweeper position, but he was also famous for his goal-scoring ability, powerful long-range shots, and precision on free kicks and penalties.

This attacking style has earned him a reputation as one of the finest attacking center-backs ever. Koeman was born in Zaandam and started his professional career at Groningen. He moved to Ajax in 1983, winning the Eredivisie title in 1984–85. In 1986, he joined rivals PSV, where he won three straight Eredivisie titles (1986–87, 1987–88, 1988–89) and the European Cup in 1988.

Koeman is one of only five European players to win a treble with their club and a cup with their national team in the same year. He transferred to Barcelona in 1989, becoming part of Johan Cruyff’s “Dream Team.” There, he helped the club win four consecutive La Liga titles (1991 to 1994) and the 1991–92 European Cup, scoring the winning goal in the final against Sampdoria. He finished his playing career at Feyenoord, retiring in 1997.

Internationally, Koeman was a key figure for the Netherlands alongside stars like Marco van Basten, Ruud Gullit, Frank Rijkaard, and Dennis Bergkamp. He won UEFA Euro 1988, played at Euro 1992, and appeared in the 1990 and 1994 FIFA World Cups, captaining the team in the latter. As a manager, Koeman has won three Eredivisie titles: two with Ajax (2001–02, 2003–04) and one with PSV (2006–07). He is the only person to have both played for and managed all three of Dutch football’s “Big Three”—Ajax, PSV, and Feyenoord.

Abroad, he managed Benfica in Portugal and Valencia in Spain, leading Los Ché to victory in the 2007–08 Copa del Rey. He also managed Premier League clubs Southampton and Everton in the 2010s. He managed the Netherlands national team from 2018 to 2020, finishing as runners-up in the 2019 UEFA Nations League. In August 2020, he became Barcelona’s manager, winning the 2020–21 Copa del Rey, but was sacked in October 2021 after a poor start to the season.

He was reappointed as Netherlands manager in 2023, stepping down shortly after the unsuccessful 2026 FIFA World Cup. Koeman began his professional career at Groningen, debuting at age 17 years and 183 days in a 2–0 win over NEC. That made him the club’s third-youngest player ever. He scored 33 goals in 90 appearances over three seasons, earning a call-up to the national team and a transfer to Ajax.

After failing to defend the title in his first season, Ajax won the league in 1984–85. The next season, under Johan Cruyff, Ajax scored 120 goals in 34 league matches and won the KNVB Cup, but finished second to PSV. In 1986, Koeman controversially moved to PSV. Under Guus Hiddink, PSV overtook Ajax late in the 1986–87 season to retain the league title.

The team won the next two Eredivisie titles as well, plus the club’s first (and only) European Cup in 1988, beating Benfica. PSV also won the KNVB Cup in 1988 and 1989, completing a treble and a double. In three seasons at PSV, Koeman scored 51 goals in 98 league appearances, averaging more than one goal every two games. His best scoring season was 1987–88, with 21 league goals.

At Barcelona, Koeman reunited with Johan Cruyff and became part of the “Dream Team.” In his first season, Barcelona won the Copa del Rey, beating Real Madrid 2–0 in the final. With teammates like Hristo Stoichkov, Romário, Pep Guardiola, and Michael Laudrup, Koeman helped the club win four straight La Liga titles from 1991 to 1994. He scored the only goal of the 1992 European Cup Final, a free kick from the edge of the box against Sampdoria at Wembley, giving Barcelona their first European Cup.

That made him the first player to score in two consecutive finals of different European competitions, having scored a consolation goal in the 1991 European Cup Winners’ Cup Final loss to Manchester United. Koeman was known for his powerful right-footed free kicks and dead-ball ability, scoring many crucial goals. One memorable strike came in a 5–0 win over Real Madrid in 1994, when his bending free kick made it 2–0. He was joint-top scorer with eight goals in the 1993–94 UEFA Champions League, though Barcelona lost the final 0–4 to AC Milan.
