Subnautica: Below Zero is a survival adventure game set in an underwater open world environment played from a first-person perspective. The player controls xenologist Robin Ayou, who lands on ocean planet 4546B to investigate her sister Sam's mysterious death. Gameplay involves exploring and surviving in alien environments, collecting resources, constructing tools, building bases and submersibles, and interacting with wildlife. Unlike its predecessor, the game includes expansive and dangerous land-based areas, and introduces a body heat gauge for land exploration alongside returning mechanics like oxygen, hunger, and thirst.

The game offers five difficulty modes: Survival, Freedom, Hardcore, Creative, and Custom. The plot follows Robin as she discovers the digitized consciousness of an Architect named Al-An, which downloads itself into her brain. She helps Al-An construct a new body while investigating her sister's death, uncovering that Sam sabotaged Alterra's research on the Kharaa bacterium and died in the resulting explosion. Robin recovers a Kharaa antidote and neutralizes the infected leviathan, then leaves 4546B with Al-An through a phasegate.

Subnautica: Below Zero was initially envisioned as downloadable content for the original Subnautica but expanded into a standalone product. It was announced in August 2018 and entered early access on January 30, 2019, for macOS and Windows. The full game released on May 14, 2021, for macOS, Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. A Nintendo Switch 2 port arrived on February 17, 2026, with a free upgrade for original Switch owners, and a mobile port followed on February 27, 2026. Physical versions were published by Bandai Namco Entertainment.

The game received generally favorable reviews from critics, with praise for building upon the original's formula, new vehicles and gadgets, technical performance, and environment design. The switch from a silent to a voiced protagonist received mixed reactions, with some critics finding the characters dull and the story less engaging. The game has a larger emphasis on storytelling compared to the original Subnautica.
