Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, the third game in the A Plague Tale series, is an action-adventure title from Asobo Studio and Focus Entertainment. Released in August 2026 for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S, it serves as a prequel to 2019's A Plague Tale: Innocence and earned positive critical reception.

The game shifts from the stealth-heavy focus of earlier entries toward more direct combat. Players control Sophia, a far more capable protagonist who can parry enemy strikes and counter with lethal finishing moves. A new dual-timeline mechanic lets players switch between the Middle Ages and the Minoan period, with actions in the ancient past influencing the present-day medieval setting.

Set in 1334—fifteen years before Innocence—the story follows smuggler Sophia (voiced by Anna Demetriou) as she uncovers her link to the Prima Macula's ancient origins. As a child, Sophia was sent to a convent where nuns injected her with a mysterious substance, triggering visions of a Greek warrior before a set of large doors. Forced to draw these visions, she was eventually rescued by her father Alec and his bandit army. Alec died searching for the truth behind her visions, and his lieutenant Faro took over, vowing to protect Sophia.

Years later, Faro's investigations point to the island of Crete, but they first need a key stored in Venice. Sophia joins a raid but is betrayed; she recovers the key—a mechanical orb—and flees, leaving her comrades behind. Returning to their hideout, she finds it under attack by the Venetian army. After fighting past a furious Faro, who suspects her of treason, she escapes with her friend Leni to Crete.

There, Sophia finds the doors from her visions, leading into Minoan ruins. Her visions and the orb guide her through a labyrinth, while Faro's bandits and the Venetian army pursue her for treasure. Cornered, Sophia falls into a pit and discovers massive black plant-like tendrils that devour anything they catch but are sensitive to light. The tendrils breach the surface, consuming Leni and others, while a thick cloud threatens to block out the sun. Sophia and Faro work together to channel a beam of light into the labyrinth's center, but Faro is mortally wounded by the traitor, Irene. He volunteers to keep the light aimed at the labyrinth as Sophia presses on.

At the center, Sophia communes with the spirit of Ariadne.

Reader's Guide

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy marks a significant shift for the series, moving from stealth-focused gameplay to a more action-oriented approach with melee combat. Asobo Studio developed the game in their in-house Zouna engine, deliberately avoiding generative AI, which they saw as a threat to creativity. The combat system was influenced by Ghost of Tsushima, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and Sifu, and was scaled back from an initially more difficult design to accommodate players familiar with the series' stealth roots. The game's music, composed by returning composer Olivier Deriviere, features a choir of 20 female Greek Cypriot vocalists and traditional instruments, reflecting the Cretan setting. The game was announced at Summer Game Fest on 8 June 2025 and released on 27 August 2026, becoming available at launch on Xbox Game Pass. It received generally favorable reviews, with 82% of critics recommending it on OpenCritic.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy?

It is the third entry in the A Plague Tale franchise, an action-adventure game built by Asobo Studio and released by Focus Entertainment on August 27, 2026. The title serves as a prequel to the 2019 game A Plague Tale: Innocence and was well received by critics.

How does Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy's gameplay differ from earlier A Plague Tale games?

Where previous titles leaned heavily on stealth and puzzle-solving, this installment pivots toward head-on, action-driven combat. Sophia can now parry incoming blows and immediately follow up with lethal counter-strikes, making her a much more aggressive and versatile fighter.

What is the dual-timeline mechanic in Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy?

It is a newly introduced system that allows players to toggle between two distinct time periods mid-playthrough. The feature weaves the prequel narrative together by letting the player experience and interact with events across both eras.

Who do you play as in Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy?

You control Sophia, who has grown into a far more capable and combat-ready protagonist compared to her earlier appearances. Her expanded toolkit—parrying, countering, and direct engagement—redefines how the player approaches encounters throughout the game.

Why is Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy considered a turning point for the series?

It repositions the franchise by moving away from the stealth-puzzle formula that defined the first two games and embracing a more action-oriented identity. As a prequel, it also deepens the series' lore by exploring the events that led up to A Plague Tale: Innocence.
