Teams
Benevento and Crotone were directly promoted from Serie B after two-year absences. On 20 August 2020, Spezia won a playoff to earn their first Serie A promotion, becoming the 66th team in the Italian top tier. After the Napoli–Genoa match on 27 September 2020, Genoa announced 14 players tested positive for COVID-19, postponing their match against Torino scheduled for 3 October 2020. On 3 October 2020, Napoli players Piotr Zieliński and Eljif Elmas tested positive; the Local Health Authority denied authorization to leave Naples, so Napoli blocked travel to Turin for the match against Juventus.
The league did not postpone the 4 October 2020 fixture. Juventus took the field without opponents, who were quarantining in Naples. Juventus were awarded a 3–0 default victory and Napoli docked one point for not following COVID-19 protocol. On 22 December 2020, Napoli's appeal to the CONI Sports Guarantee Board overturned these penalties. The match was recovered on 7 April 2021.
