1973 European Cup Winners' Cup Final vs Leeds United
Milan beat Leeds United 1-0 in Thessaloniki, a final clouded by the referee.
The 1973 European Cup Winners' Cup final, the 13th final of the competition, was played between Milan and Leeds United at the Kaftanzoglio Stadium in Thessaloniki, Greece. Milan won 1-0.
Lore & Background
The Greek crowd, angered by what it saw as referee Christos Michas's bias towards Milan, threw missiles during the winners' lap of honour. Leeds asked for a replay and UEFA refused; Michas was later banned for life for match fixing, though his handling of this game was never investigated, and decades later the Yorkshire MEP Richard Corbett petitioned UEFA to strip Milan of the title.
