History

The tournament was initially staged in Italy. The first international edition took place in 1993 in Washington, D.C., featuring AC Milan and Torino. After a return to Italy, the Supercoppa was held in Tripoli in 2002 and in East Rutherford, near New York City, the following year. Following five consecutive Italian-hosted editions, a new international phase began in 2009 when Beijing hosted Lazio versus Inter Milan; China hosted three more tournaments by 2015.

Qatar hosted the event in 2014 and 2016. In 2018, an agreement with the General Sports Authority brought the Supercoppa to Saudi Arabia for three of the next five editions, sparking controversy over restrictions on women attending. Then-Serie A president Gaetano Miccichè described the family sections as a sign of progress. The cup returned to Italy in 2020 for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, then moved back to Saudi Arabia, where a six-year agreement keeps it there until 2029.
