Teams
Benevento and Crotone came up directly from Serie B, each returning after two years away. Spezia secured their first-ever promotion to the top flight on 20 August 2020 by winning a playoff, making them the 66th club to play in Italy’s highest division. The day after a Napoli–Genoa match on 27 September 2020, Genoa revealed that 14 of their players had tested positive for COVID-19, which forced the postponement of their scheduled 3 October fixture against Torino.
On 3 October, Napoli players Piotr Zieliński and Eljif Elmas also tested positive. The local health authority refused to let them leave Naples, so Napoli prevented their squad from traveling to Turin for a match against Juventus set for 4 October. The league declined to call off the game. Juventus took the field without opponents, who were isolating in Naples, and were handed a 3–0 default win.
Napoli also lost a point after the Disciplinary Commission found they had broken the national COVID-19 protocol. Napoli appealed successfully to the CONI Sports Guarantee Board, and on 22 December 2020 both penalties were reversed. The match was finally played on 7 April 2021, over six months after its original date.
