Composition and lyrics
The song features vocals from multiple band members: Danny sings the chorus, Johnny 3 Tears raps the first verse, and J-Dog raps the second verse, with J-Dog also screaming the final verse. A bridge is sung by both J-Dog and Danny. Fans often compare the song to the Swan Songs single "Young" due to similar vibes and meanings. Johnny 3 Tears stated the lyrics were inspired by America's youth, expressing empathy for what children face.
Music video
The official music video, directed by Shawn ‘Clown’ Crahan of Slipknot, was released on 10 December. It features various scenes: Da Kurlzz isolated in a fenced area ignored by crowds, Funny Man robbing a liquor store, J-Dog burning pictures of each band member in a church, Danny smashing televisions in front of a young girl, Johnny 3 Tears aligning cocaine into the phrase "we are built from broken parts", and Charlie Scene setting a suited man on fire.
Crahan included many elements to keep the video visually interesting. The video was shot in California at what Danny called "the most haunted place in California", later identified as Linda Vista Hospital. This was the first video to include the band's latest masks: J-Dog wore a white mask with gas mask filters, a dollar symbol, glowing red eyes, and an all-seeing eye; Johnny 3 Tears had a mask with a 3 on the left, butterflies on the right, and a mosaic design; Charlie Scene wore a dark grey bandanna with matte black spectacles; Funny Man wore a black cloth mask with silver outlining resembling a gorilla, with three dots on the right cheek and his initials on the forehead; Da Kurlzz had a mask with a white left side showing an angry scowl and a right side resembling burnt lava; Danny's mask appeared more metal-plated with bullets replacing the Latin cross on his eye.
A lyric video was published on the band's YouTube channel on 29 October, a day before the single's iTunes release, showing lyrics alongside clips of advertisements and urban landscapes. "We Are" received positive reviews, including a 10 out of 10 from Aristdistrict.
