K'naan, a rapper born in Somalia, co-wrote and performed the track "Is Anybody Out There?" with Canadian singer-songwriter Nelly Furtado. It appears on his debut EP, More Beautiful Than Silence. The song dropped as a digital download in the United States on January 24, 2012, with a physical release in Germany following on March 30. It climbed to number 14 on the Canadian Hot 100. Its biggest success came in New Zealand, where it hit number one on the RIANZ chart for the week of March 12, 2012, marking Furtado's fourth chart-topper there.

The track was produced by Sham & Motesart and lyrically addresses self-assurance, separation, and loneliness.
