Critical reception
Reviews for the song were generally positive, though some were mixed. Robert Christgau gave a positive review, describing it as combining confidence with affection rather than macho. Channel 4 awarded it one star out of ten, calling it the musical equivalent of a dog's fart at the dinner table. Digital Spy gave two stars out of five, deeming the lyrics cold, functional, and ruthlessly effective like a state-of-the-art refrigerator.
Music video
In August 2007, Maroon 5 asked fans to submit homemade videos for the song, but a different video was released in Europe and Australia in October 2007. The official video, directed by Sophie Muller, premiered on VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown on December 1, 2007. It begins with flashbacks of Adam Levine and a female character (played by Tania Raymonde) arguing, after which Levine leaves. The video then shows Levine sitting in a chair, thinking, with the band performing in the background. He realizes he will not go home without her and searches the city, bumping into a Chinese lion puppet. He eventually finds her at a restaurant with another man. Jesse Carmichael plays both piano and guitar in the video.
