Content

The song draws on the New Testament parable of The Rich Man and Lazarus. In that story, a rich man dies and goes to hell, where he sees Lazarus, a beggar who had eaten crumbs from under his table, sitting beside Abraham in Heaven. The rich man asks Abraham to send Lazarus with water to cool his tongue, but Abraham refuses because a wide chasm separates Heaven and hell. The rich man then asks that Lazarus be sent to warn his brothers to follow God's law, but Abraham says they already have Moses and the prophets and would not believe even if someone returned from the dead.

Letters from the Commander/History of Memento Mori

In the third part of the History of Memento Mori, dated 3.16.01, the enemy cried out, "Memento Mori, we are human too! We are in pain and we are dying!" The commander answered, urging them to break their pact with the Dread Army, saying that walking away would leave a wound but it would heal, and that they did not have to be slaves to death. The enemy kept crying out for something to drink. The commander warned that if they died that way they would have wasted their life on death, and that once dead the chasm would be fixed and could not be undone. Some turned and joined the Passerby Army, while others died.
