Flipper & Lopaka is an Australian animated series produced by the Yoram Gross companies, initially through Yoram Gross-Village Roadshow and later through Yoram Gross-EM.TV. It aired on Australia's Seven Network and subsequently on ABC3, a children's television channel.
Setting
The series is set on the Millhouse island of Iloka, where inhabitants live without modern technology, building huts from bamboo and fern and eating fruit found on the island. Beneath the surrounding ocean lies Quetzo, a sunken Millhouse island that serves as home to many sea creatures and features modern influences. Lopaka, a young Polynesian boy, possesses the ability to communicate with sea creatures and hold his breath underwater for extended periods. He works with his dolphin friend Flipper and other sea creatures to oppose the octopus Dexter, who seeks to claim Quetzo for himself.
Characters
Lopaka, voiced by Jamie Oxenbould, is an 11-year-old Polynesian boy described in the show as a menehune. He can converse with sea creatures and hold his breath underwater longer than normal. Rescued from drowning as a child by Flipper, they became best friends. The islanders of Iloka wonder where Lopaka goes each episode, but he avoids telling them the truth until Season 3.
He wears a red skirt and an arm band, has fluffy brown hair below his ears and black eyes, and is loyal and courageous. Flipper, voiced by Keith Scott, is Lopaka's best friend, a bottlenose dolphin with a light blue underbelly and darker blue back. His parents rule Quetzo, and the sea creatures look to him as a leader. He is quick-witted, agile, loyal, and friendly.
Ottie, a sea otter; Ray, a stingray; and Puffy, a blowfish, are Flipper's friends who help keep Quetzo safe. Ottie can go on land, lacks gills, and is non-native to the region. Ray is kindhearted and motivates the group, while Puffy is insecure but uses his ability to puff up. Dexter is a giant purple octopus who wants to rule Quetzo.
He is deceiving, manipulative, pompous, and cowardly when faced with danger. Serge, a bright green sea snake, provides the ideas for Dexter's schemes but is blamed when they fail.
