Mega Babies

Three mutant babies with superpowers battle monsters and aliens.

Last updated

Mega Babies, an animated series from 1999, was created by Christian and Yvon Tremblay, the brothers behind SWAT Kats: The Radical Squadron. Produced by CinéGroupe and Landmark Entertainment Group for Sony Wonder, it aired on Fox Family Channel and Teletoon. The show was also broadcast in the UK on Sky One's weekday mornings and later repeated on Channel 5 on weekend mornings between 2001 and 2002.

Lore/Story/Guide

The show follows a trio of mutant infant children—Meg, Derrick, and Buck—who fight off evil monsters and aliens. Their caregiver is Nurse Lazlo, and the action takes place in Your City, USA. After their birth, the children were brought to an orphanage. When the entire Solar System aligned itself, the children and their nurse were struck by lightning.

The children were given super strength and other super powers, and Nurse Lazlo's I.Q. rose. The series was announced in January 1999 as a co-production between CinéGroupe and Sony Wonder, set to premiere on the Fox Family Channel in fall of that year. Landmark Entertainment Group budgeted between $5.9 million (C$9 million) and $6.6 million for 52 10-minute episodes, which were pre-produced in Montreal and animated in Asia, then bundled into 26 half-hour daily shows.

Two seasons aired: Season 1 in 1999 and Season 2 in 2000. A video game based on the show, with the same name, was developed and published by Global Star Software in 2000, exclusively for PC.

Voice actors

The voice cast for Mega Babies included Sonja Ball as Buck, Dean Hagopian in many male roles, Laura Teasdale as Derrick, Jaclyn Linetsky as Meg, and Bronwen Mantel as Nurse Lazlo. While recording took place in Montreal, Vancouver-based Terry Klassen handled voice direction, marking his sole animated project outside that city. Terrence Scammell, who voiced multiple characters and the main title narration, later assumed the role of voice director for subsequent episodes.
