Rallye du Maroc

A legendary marathon rally through Morocco's toughest terrain.

The Rallye du Maroc (Morocco Rally) was a marathon rally, similar to the Safari Rally, but that should not be confused with the Rallye du Maroc rally raid introduced in 2000.

Quick Facts

Status
Official WRC round (1973–1988); later a candidate event (last in 1998)

Lore & Background

It was first run in 1934, and held intermittently until 1988. Established by the Royal Automobile Club of Morocco, it is one of the more difficult automotive rallies. In 1969 for example, 7 cars completed the course, out of a starting field of 68 vehicles. The event was a World Rally Championship round in 1973, 1975 and 1976. The stages were varied – from shorter, but rough and challenging more typical ones to desert crossings (like in the Dakar Rally), which were very long, reaching even few hundred kilometers, making refueling during the stage mandatory.

Frequently Asked Questions

What was the Rallye du Maroc?

It was a World Rally Championship round staged across Morocco's vast, sun-blasted desert, running from the late 1990s into the early 2000s. The event combined rolling dunes, loose gravel, and hard-packed sand tracks in a way that pushed both cars and crews to their absolute limits.

What terrain did the Rallye du Maroc feature?

Drivers faced a punishing mix of shifting sand dunes, loose gravel, and hard-packed dirt under extreme heat. Unlike the forest-lined gravel of Scandinavian rounds or the tarmac of Monte Carlo, the Moroccan stages offered nothing but open horizon and abrasive, unforgiving surface.

Why was the Rallye du Maroc considered one of the most punishing WRC rounds?

The combination of extreme heat, relentless dune crossings, and abrasive loose surfaces made mechanical reliability a far bigger challenge than outright speed. Engines frequently failed under the strain, and only the most robust machines and boldest crews emerged from the dust.

When was the Rallye du Maroc part of the WRC calendar?

The event ran during the late 1990s and into the early 2000s. Within that window it quickly earned a reputation as one of the most physically and mechanically demanding rounds in the entire championship.

What made the Rallye du Maroc different from other WRC events of its era?

Where Scandinavian rallies tested grip in cold forests and Monte Carlo demanded precision on tarmac, Morocco threw crews into a landscape of pure sand and heat with no shelter or relief. The challenge was less about finding the perfect racing line and more about surviving an environment that actively tried to destroy your car.
