Technical regulations

The technical regulations for R-GT cars are defined in FIA Appendix J, article 256. For cars with technical passports (2014–2019), the 2019 version applies; for homologated cars from 2020 onward, the 2021 version is used. Cars must be series-production GT vehicles with two-wheel drive; four-wheel-drive bases must be converted. A restrictor diameter set by the FIA ensures a weight/power ratio of 3.4 kg/hp.

History

Lotus presented an Exige S R-GT at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show and obtained FIA homologation in July 2012, making it the first R-GT car. Its competition debut at Rally Vinho da Madeira ended in retirement due to an electronics-related accident, and the car did not reappear internationally; its homologation lapsed in 2019. From 2014 to 2019, the FIA issued technical passports for individual cars. Marc Duez entered a Porsche 996 GT3 for the 2014 Monte Carlo Rally but retired on the last day. At the 2014 Rallye Deutschland, Richard Tuthill finished 27th in a modified Porsche 997, the first Porsche finish in a WRC event since 1986. The first FIA R-GT Cup was held in 2015 on five tarmac events, won by François Delecour in a Tuthill-prepared Porsche 997. The cup was not contested in 2016 due to low participation but revived in 2017 with the Abarth 124 R-GT, which debuted at the 2017 Monte Carlo Rally with four participants. The Abarth Rally Cup, a one-make series on ERC rounds, began in 2019. The Alpine A110 Rally was announced in May 2019, presented in September 2019, and homologated to R-GT in July 2020; as of March 2024 it remained the only homologated R-GT car.

Champions

The R-GT Cup was created in 2015 to allow GT cars in rallying, as part of the FIA's Group R structure. Initially run on selected WRC events, the calendar later expanded to include ERC rounds. Champions are covered in the respective season articles; individual starts are not listed here.
