Playing career
Scott Kosmachuk grew up in the Greater Toronto Area and spent his junior career with the Guelph Storm of the Ontario Hockey League. In his final season with the Storm, he placed third in the league with 101 points and helped the club capture the OHL championship. Guelph then reached the 2014 Memorial Cup final but fell to the Edmonton Oil Kings. Selected by the Winnipeg Jets in the third round of the 2012 NHL draft, Kosmachuk was sent back to the Storm for his last two years of junior eligibility. After attending his first Jets training camp in 2014, he was assigned to the St. John’s IceCaps, Winnipeg’s American Hockey League affiliate, for the 2014–15 season. The IceCaps moved to Winnipeg the following summer, and Kosmachuk spent the next season with the Manitoba Moose. On March 8, 2016, the Jets called him up on an emergency basis to fill in for the injured Joel Armia, and he made his NHL debut that night against the Nashville Predators. In his third game, on March 13, 2016, he notched his first NHL point, setting up the game-winning goal in a 3-2 win over the Colorado Avalanche. Following the 2016–17 season, the Jets did not extend a qualifying offer, making him a free agent. On September 13, 2017, he signed a one-year AHL contract with the Hartford Wolf Pack and was invited to the New York Rangers’ training camp, the Wolf Pack’s NHL parent club. After camp, he was assigned to the Wolf Pack for the 2017–18 season, where he played a top-six offensive role and finished second on the team with 15 goals and 42 points in 70 games. On July 2, 2018, he signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Colorado Avalanche as a free agent. During the 2018–19 season, he played solely for the Colorado Eagles, the Avalanche’s AHL affiliate, in their first AHL season, recording 12 goals and 23 points in 54 games. On June 28, 2019, the Avalanche traded his expiring NHL rights, along with 2020 second- and third-round draft picks, to the Washington Capitals for André Burakovsky.
