Playing career
Eric O'Dell spent four seasons in the Ontario Hockey League from 2007 to 2011, putting up 100 goals and 107 assists for a total of 207 points over 198 games. He was part of the gold medal-winning Team Canada at the 2008 IIHF World U18 Championships and was selected for the OHL All-Star Game during the 2009–10 season. O'Dell made his professional debut in the American Hockey League with the Chicago Wolves in the 2009–10 season. On June 1, 2010, he signed an entry-level contract with the Atlanta Thrashers. After the Thrashers moved and became the Winnipeg Jets at the end of the 2011-12 NHL season, O'Dell played three seasons with the St. John's Ice Caps in the AHL. He made his NHL debut in the 2013–14 season and scored his first NHL goal on January 11, 2014, for the Jets against Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Curtis McElhinney. On July 1, 2015, O'Dell left the Jets as a free agent and signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Ottawa Senators. He started the 2015–16 season with the Binghamton Senators in the AHL, recording 37 points in 50 games, before being traded to the Buffalo Sabres on February 27, 2016, as part of a seven-player deal. As a free agent on August 9, 2016, he moved overseas, signing a one-year contract with HC Sochi of the KHL. After three seasons with Sochi, he signed a one-year deal with Metallurg Magnitogorsk on May 1, 2019. In the 2019–20 season, he managed 6 goals and 17 points in 46 games. On June 2, 2020, he signed a two-year contract with HC Sibir Novosibirsk, but an injury in October of the 2020–21 season limited him to just 9 games for most of the campaign.
