via Wikipedia: Wings of Fire (novel series) · see source
Ruby, born Tourmaline, is a SkyWing in Wings of Fire and one of the three main characters of Hero. Her personality, memories and looks as Ruby were held in an earring Chameleon enchanted with Darkstalker's scroll.
When Peril removed the earring during Ruby's royal challenge against her mother Scarlet, Tourmaline's own memories and strength came back. She went on to rule the SkyWings as queen.
