Reception
Critics panned Exosquad. GamePro delivered a mostly negative review, acknowledging the three gameplay styles offer variety but each suffers from serious flaws. In space-shooter levels, starry backdrops make it hard to spot incoming meteorites and Neo missiles. Ground attacks are a slow, easy affair where the player's E-Frame trudges across the landscape to take down equally sluggish enemies. The one-on-one fighting features an "intriguing mix" of attack types but is ruined by poor controls. GamePro also felt the game was far too hard for the TV show's young audience. Next Generation gave it one star out of five, calling the controls unacceptably bad and noting that separate sprites for each character segment create gangly, awkward animations. Electronic Gaming Monthly's four reviewers praised the cinematic intro but otherwise condemned the game, citing poor controls, outdated graphics, and a failure to execute any of its multiple gameplay styles well. They scored it 3.75 out of 10.
