Atletico first entered the European Cup in 1958-59, taking Spain's place because champions Real Madrid were the holders. Under coach Lorenzo they won La Liga in 1973 and reached the 1974 European Cup final; after that defeat Luis Aragones took over as coach. They reached the final again in 2014 and 2016.
