Samantha Mulder Abduction
The sister vanished in 1973 whose absence defined a brother's life-long quest.
Samantha Ann Mulder is a fictional character in The X-Files, serving as the younger sister of FBI Special Agent Fox Mulder. Her abduction from the family home on Martha's Vineyard on November 27, 1973, when she was eight years old, remains the central trauma driving her brother's life. Witnessed by twelve-year-old Fox, this event ignited his obsession with extraterrestrials and led him to join the FBI and head the X-Files section. While ostensibly taken by aliens, the truth behind her disappearance involves complex layers of deception, including impostors, clones, and a long-standing conspiracy that kept her fate hidden for decades.

Lore & Background
The narrative surrounding Samantha evolved significantly throughout the series. Initially presented as an alien abduction, later revelations introduced multiple impostors and clones. In one instance, an adult woman claiming to be Samantha appeared twenty-two years later, stating she had lost her memory after being returned by aliens in 1979, only to be revealed as a clone killed by the Alien Bounty Hunter. Another theory involved John L. Roche, a serial killer Mulder profiled; Mulder was manipulated into believing Samantha was one of his sixteen victims but exposed Roche's lie when he led him to the wrong house. Jeremiah Smith later took Mulder to a covert bee husbandry facility in remote Alberta, where a group of Samantha clones, none older than she was when she vanished in 1973, were working; the facility was destroyed soon afterwards.
Reader's Guide
Samantha's true storyline is resolved in the seventh-season episode "Closure": she was raised by the Cigarette Smoking Man alongside Jeffrey Spender, ran away aged 14 after constant tests, and was taken by "Walk-ins", spiritual beings who save the souls of children due to suffer terrible fates. Her disappearance on November 27, 1973, forced the Mulders to choose between Fox and her for abduction, with her taking the role of hostage to ensure Bill Mulder's silence regarding Syndicate experiments. The character was portrayed by Vanessa Morley as a child, Megan Leitch as an adult, and various others including Mimi Paley in 'Closure'. Mulder eventually admitted she was dead but kept her picture alongside his FBI exploits and alien evidence.
