Plot
In a future where humanity has created advanced robots and artificial intelligence, cybernetic organisms called TR-4s, all portrayed by Paul Logan, are used for manual labor. The newer TR-5 model reprograms these machines, sparking a revolt that bombs cities and deploys countless identical TR-4 androids to wipe out all human life. A group of survivors, led by small-town Sheriff Reed (A Martinez), fights to stay alive. They meet Kurt Ross (Jeremy London), who wields a weapon that can disable any TR-4 it strikes and seems to know the machines intimately; it is strongly suggested that Ross and Reed have a prior connection.
With Ross’s help, the group battles the TR-4s and finds an airship used by the machines. Ross suggests they fly to the space station where the TR-4s originate to shut them down remotely, but they need fuel. They locate the fuel, but a TR-4 shoots Sheriff Reed in the leg. Aboard the ship, the survivors notice metal under Reed’s skin, making him doubt his own identity.
Ross reveals that Reed is actually one of the first TR-5s, placed in the community with Ross acting as his handler; all of Reed’s memories are implants based on Ross’s own. Bronson (Dustin Harnish) grows suspicious that everyone else is also a cyborg, but Chloe (Lauren Walsh) convinces him otherwise by telling him she is pregnant. At the space station, the group fights the TR-4s in large numbers; Bronson is killed, and Tiffany (Lucinda Rogers) gets separated from the others.
Ross tries to shut down the TR-4s, but the control console repeatedly locks him out. Suddenly, all TR-4s power down, and Ross realizes their energy is being redirected to a giant TR-5—the one that started the rebellion. This massive robot kills Ross with a blade in its arm after his EMP weapon fails, then attacks Chloe. Reed appears and lures the TR-5 into an airlock, and Chloe ejects both Reed and the robot into space.
The TR-4s reactivate despite Tiffany hitting the shutdown switch, but when she yanks the cords from the control box, they all die at once. Chloe, Tiffany, Tanner, and Chloe’s unborn child are left as the only survivors, possibly the last of humanity.
