Crystal of Power
A fan-created artifact with no canonical basis in the Riftwar Saga.
In the lore of Midkemia, magical artifacts known as Crystals of Power are often cited by fans as vital conduits for arcane energy, but it is important to note that no such named artifact appears in the canonical Riftwar Saga novels. The claim that these are scrying crystals used by sorcerers of Great Kesh is a fabrication; the books contain no description of such devices. Similarly, the idea that they facilitate coordination between the Emperor of Great Kesh and his agents is unsupported by the text. This entry clarifies that the Crystals of Power are a fan invention, not a canonical element of the series.

Lore & Background
The crystals are often described by fans as crafted using techniques unique to Great Kesh, but this has no basis in the Riftwar Saga. No such artifacts allow sorcerers to see across distances or maintain contact during the Riftwar. Pug, the young mage from Crydee, does not interact with such crystals early in his journey—because they do not exist in the canon. His early magical experiences involve Tsurani orbs and other genuine artifacts. The notion of a Keshian power structure tethered by these crystals is entirely fabricated; the books contain no mention of them as tools for surveillance or command.
Reader's Guide
Magic in the Riftwar Saga relies heavily on focus and intent. Crystals used as power conduits require a trained mage to channel energy safely; untrained handling often results in feedback or injury. These artifacts are primarily used for scrying and communication rather than direct combat, though they can amplify spell potency. Their impact on the war was strategic, allowing Mallorea to coordinate attacks across continents instantly. Limitations include distance and interference. The crystal connection can be disrupted by strong magical fields or physical damage. Possession of these crystals is a mark of high status within the Mallorean hierarchy, signifying trust from the Darken Rahl.
Did You Know?
- No character in the Riftwar Saga, including Pug, ever uses a Crystal of Power for any purpose.
- The idea that these crystals can be damaged or severed is purely speculative, as they do not exist in the canon.
