Facts from the source article.

Creation

Kaiu Shirai described Norman as the mainstay of the group with a lighter mood compared to Ray and Emma. For his design, Shirai requested something angelic and ethereal with a simple philosophy, envisioning him as a moon or knight. Posuka Demizu found the design difficult, particularly body type, face, and hair; Norman was originally slender, but showing difference from other children in identical clothes was challenging, so the current design was kept.

Appearances

Norman was born on March 21, 2034. At the story's start on October 12, 2045, he is an 11-year-old at Grace Field House with blue eyes, short white hair parted left with a longer upward-curving piece on the left, and authentication number 22194 tattooed on his neck. The most intelligent of the three, he first discovers Ray's identity as Isabella's spy and prepares backup plans. After Ray is betrayed, Norman accepts being shipped before his 12th birthday to deceive Isabella and let the others escape.

Instead of being killed, he is sent to research facility Lambda Λ7214, created to produce higher-quality human livestock faster for the tifari ceremony. He escapes Lambda after leading an uprising, then establishes the Paradise Hideout for rescued children and plans to wipe out all demons. Norman appears in three of four light novels, the comedic spin-off Oyakusoku no Neverland, and four drama CDs: GF House Ghost Disturbance, Gift from the 39th Girl, The day Emma cried, and Voice Time Capsule.

He is a playable character in the mobile game The Promised Neverland: Escape the Hunting Grounds and in crossover collaborations with Identity V, Jumputi Heroes, Dragon Egg, Vivid Army, and LINE POP 2.

Reception

Norman was nominated for Best Male Character at the 41st Anime Grand Prix in 2019 and for Man of the Year at the 6th Anime Trending Awards in 2020. He ranked first in the 2018 Color Illustration Character Poll and second in the 2018 Weekly Shōnen Jump popularity poll, also taking second in the series' second popularity poll with 4,763 votes. Toda observed that Norman was written as not masculine, contrasting Emma as not feminine, and that by hiding his identity as Minerva he sealed off his angelic past to become a manly leader. Members of Λ7214 saw him as serious, winter, and emperor, far from the kind, smart, warmly smiling Norman Emma knew. Toda concluded that Norman's subconscious longing for masculinity emerged at Λ7214, where he used the name James Ratri and codename William Minerva, called the boss.

Merchandising

A Nendoroid figure of Norman was released by Good Smile Company in September 2019. To mark his birthday that year, Noitamina Shop & Cafe Theater ran a cafe event selling various merchandise. Additional products have included figurines, plush dolls, perfumes, mugs, and T-shirts. In March 2021, a collaboration with Megane Flower glasses produced limited-edition frames styled after Norman, Ray, and Emma. Norman also appeared on a MasterCard credit card in 2022.
