The history of this stronghold begins with King Helm Hammerhand, who retreated here during a time of great famine and cold known as the Long Winter. He refused to leave his people even when food ran low, eventually dying within the walls from starvation and exposure while watching over his kin. His son Hale later died defending the same valley against invading Dunlendings, cementing the site's reputation for sacrifice. During the War of the Ring, Saruman launched a massive assault on the fortress with an army of Uruk-hai led by Grima Wormtongue.

King Théoden and his warriors held the walls through a night of siege until Gandalf arrived to rally reinforcements at dawn. The victory saved Rohan from destruction but left many brave soldiers buried in the valley below. Following the war, Helm's Deep remained a vital defensive position for the kingdom.
