During the War of the Ring, Saruman launched a massive assault on the fortress with an army of Uruk-hai led by Grima Wormtongue. King Théoden and his warriors held the walls through a night of siege until Gandalf arrived to rally reinforcements at dawn. The victory saved Rohan from destruction but left many brave soldiers buried in the valley below. Following the war, Helm's Deep remained a vital defensive position for the kingdom.
