Rangers of Ithilien

Silent shadows guarding a kingdom that has forgotten how to sleep.

The Rangers of Ithilien are the ghostly sentinels haunting the twilight realm between the Anduin and the shadowed gates of Mordor. Operating in small, silent 'outfits,' they serve as Gondor's unseen eyes within enemy territory, turning the lush forests into a deadly trap for Sauron's armies through ambush, stealth, and an intimate knowledge of every hidden path. Led by Faramir, son of the Steward Denethor, these warriors embody the fading light of Númenor in a land long abandoned. Though few in number against the hordes at the Black Gate, their relentless vigilance for centuries denied the Enemy full control of the Great River's eastern banks.

Lore & Background

Once the 'Garden of Gondor,' Ithilien was a realm of flowing streams and fragrant flowers east of the Anduin. But after Osgiliath fell and Mordor's shadow lengthened, it became a contested wasteland where only the Rangers remained. Refusing to surrender their ancestral soil, they retreated into the ruins of ancient palaces and deep caverns, most famously Henneth Annûn—the 'Window of the Sunset,' where a hidden waterfall masks their secret stronghold. Their existence is one of perpetual war in silence; unlike the heavy infantry of Minas Tirith, they move like phantoms through fern and fen. Clad in cloaks of grey-green that mimic the forest floor, they are masters of stillness, capable of lying motionless for days to watch a supply line or wait for the perfect moment to sever it.

Reader's Guide

The Rangers of Ithilien stand as the enduring will of Gondor during its darkest hours, dedicated to denying safe passage through their lands and gathering intelligence on Mordor's movements. Living in absolute secrecy, they transform the rugged terrain and crumbling ruins into an impenetrable fortress. Recruited from those faithful sons of Gondor who refuse to accept the loss of the East, they operate with remarkable autonomy under Faramir, yet remain fiercely loyal to the Stewards of the White Tower. Their role in the War of the Ring was critical: intercepting Frodo and Samwise Gamgee near the borders, initially mistaking them for spies before recognizing their true purpose.
