Avatar: The Last Airbender (franchise)

Animated franchise about the Avatar who maintains world balance.

Avatar: The Last Airbender is an American multimedia franchise created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. It began with an animated television series of the same name that aired on Nickelodeon from 2005 to 2008, set in an Asian-inspired fantasy world where certain people can telekinetically manipulate one of the four classical elements—air, water, earth, or fire—and only the Avatar can bend all four. The franchise has expanded into a sequel animated series, comic books, novelizations, art books, video games, a live-action film, a live-action television remake, a tabletop roleplaying game, a concert tour, and a podcast.

Lore & Background

The franchise is set in a world divided into four nations: the Water Tribes, the Fire Nation, the Air Nomads, and the Earth Kingdom. People of each nation can bend their respective element, while the Avatar—reborn into a different nation after each death—can bend all four and is responsible for maintaining spiritual and physical balance. The original series follows Avatar Aang, the last surviving Air Nomad, as he seeks to end the Fire Nation's war of conquest, aided by Katara, Sokka, and Toph, while the exiled Prince Zuko pursues him before eventually joining his cause.

The sequel series, The Legend of Korra (2012–2014), is set 70 years later and follows Aang's successor, Korra, a waterbender from the Southern Water Tribe. She moves to Republic City to learn airbending from Aang's son Tenzin and faces political upheavals including an anti-bending movement, civil war, an anarchist conspiracy, and authoritarian rule. A live-action adaptation of the original series premiered on Netflix in 2024, and a new 2D animated series, Avatar: Seven Havens, set after Korra's time, was announced for release in October 2026.

Reader's Guide

The Avatar franchise has had a significant cultural impact, spawning a dedicated fanbase and critical acclaim for its storytelling, world-building, and themes of balance, identity, and redemption. The original series is widely regarded as a landmark in Western animation, and its sequel expanded the universe with more mature political and spiritual narratives. The franchise's expansion into live-action, comics, and a tabletop roleplaying game—whose Kickstarter became the most successful for a tabletop game in the platform's history—demonstrates its enduring popularity. The formation of Avatar Studios in 2021 signaled a commitment to new projects, including an animated film released in 2026 and the upcoming series Seven Havens. Despite a poorly received 2010 live-action film, the franchise has maintained a strong legacy, with the 2024 live-action series receiving a multi-season renewal.
