History

In 2018, Netflix announced a live-action remake of Avatar: The Last Airbender, with original creators DiMartino and Konietzko as executive producers and showrunners. They departed in June 2020 due to creative differences. That year, Nickelodeon licensed the original series and The Legend of Korra to Netflix, sparking a resurgence in popularity. This success led Nickelodeon to rekindle its relationship with Konietzko and DiMartino. In February 2021, ViacomCBS announced Avatar Studios as a new division of Nickelodeon, helmed by DiMartino and Konietzko as co-chief creative officers reporting to president Ramsey Ann Naito. The studio's first project was an animated theatrical film, initially planned to begin production in 2021. Titled Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, it was released on Paramount+ on July 25, 2026, with a limited theatrical release, continuing the story after the original series. In June 2022, two additional theatrical animated films were reported in development. In February 2025, a new series, Avatar: Seven Havens, was announced as in production.
