Critical reception
The song received positive reviews from music critics. Jon Dolan of Rolling Stone gave it three stars, describing it as an Eighties-rock fever dream with Springsteen mythos and Toto-Journey power hooks. Nicky Barrison of NME called it a grand return and the Killersiest comeback single imaginable, noting the band's re-embrace of their inner Springsteen. Nolan Feening of Entertainment Weekly wrote that the song starts gently with piano chords but gains momentum quickly, becoming a galloping desert rocker.
Mark Richards of Stereoboard.com called it a great alternative summer song. Nick Bassett of The Re-View praised its heartfelt, retrospective lyrics and rousing stadium chorus. Readers of Rolling Stone voted it the best song of summer 2012 in a readers' poll. It was the number one most downloaded song in South Africa for 2012.
