Background
The child of Sonny's affair with his sister's bridesmaid, he was kept out of the family as a boy, and in Puzo's novel Lucy never conceived a child with Sonny at all. As an adult he turns down Michael's offer of a legitimate job to work for Joey Zasa, who runs what is left of the family's New York rackets, then falls out with him when he senses Zasa is after Michael's power; at a failed peace meeting Zasa calls him a bastard and Vincent bites his ear, and that night he kills the two hitmen Zasa sends.
Encouraged by Connie, Michael takes him under his wing, admiring his courage and loyalty while fearing he has Sonny's temper. Vincent saves Michael from Zasa's ambush at the Atlantic City summit and, with Connie's and Al Neri's approval, kills Zasa while Michael lies in hospital after a diabetic stroke, which angers Michael even though he had killed Sollozzo on the same logic 34 years earlier. His romance with Michael's daughter Mary alarms his uncle, who sets him to spy on the traitor Don Altobello and so uncovers Licio Lucchesi's plot.
Coppola has called him a blend of the five Corleone men: Vito's cunning, Sonny's temper, Michael's ruthlessness, Fredo's sensitivity and Tom Hagen's loyalty.
