The Pawnshop No. 8

The Pawnshop No. 8, also referred to as Pawnshop #8, is a 2003 Taiwanese television series that blends romance with supernatural elements. It aired on Star Chinese Channel (now Star Entertainment Channel) and is adapted from a novel of the same name by Hong Kong writer Zita Law. The show was produced by TransWorld Production Co. and licensed in the United States by ImaginAsian. Its cast includes Alex To, Tien Hsin, Ben Lee, Chiang Tsu-ping, Remus Kam, and Penny Lin. The series earned critical acclaim and was well received across several Asian countries, particularly mainland China, for its fusion of Western religious concepts, such as Christianity, with both pre-modern and modern Chinese society.

The story centers on a fictional pawnshop located in a hidden dimension, operated by Satan (referred to in the show as a shadow), who oversees all management. Satan selects one master to run the business, granting that person immortality, the ability to predict life and death, and fortune, in exchange for strict adherence to the rules set by Satan. The narrative begins in the late Qing dynasty, progresses through the establishment of the Republic of China, and continues into modern-day Taiwan. An urban legend holds that customers who find the pawnshop can obtain anything they desire, provided they willingly pay an increasing price with each visit. The pawnshop’s purpose is to tempt patrons into pawning items and valuables—such as body organs, sentience, luck, abilities, and especially souls—in exchange for what they want, with the pawned goods forfeited under normal circumstances. Satan has fought angels for eons and reveals that the ultimate goal is to collect patrons’ souls through temptation and greed.

In the first arc (episodes 1–39), set in 1515 during the mid-Ming dynasty, a master uses a pawned item to restore his lover’s sanity, defying Satan’s orders. Satan punishes him by burning him alive and also takes his lover’s life. The pawnshop remains vacant until 1909, when wealthy businessman Han Nuo, married to Yue Yin and father of a young boy named Han Lei, is chosen by Satan as its successor. Satan begins tormenting Han Nuo’s family by possessing Han Lei, forcing Han Nuo to agree to work for him.
