Season 1: Vidya is a kind-hearted and simple girl from Benaras. She is made to do all the work in her household and is tortured by her uncle, aunt, and cousin, who do not allow her to get an education. A businessman from Delhi, Rajendra Pratap Singh, decides she will be his daughter-in-law. On her wedding day, Vidya discovers her new husband is mentally unstable with the mind of a child due to a car accident six months ago. Sindoora, Sagar's evil stepsister, caused the accident and harasses Vidya. After Sagar's operation in Singapore, he does not remember his marriage. Sindoora tries to kill Sagar again, but Aniket protects him and becomes paralyzed. Sagar and Vidya eventually die together after being shot by Sindoora at a cliff. Season 2: 21 years later, Sagar and Vidya are reborn as Amar and Divya on the night of their death, with their economic statuses swapped. Amar grows up poor, Divya wealthy. They meet in Benaras, fall in love, and eventually remember their past lives. They work with an adult Bharat to take down Sindoora, and the show ends with their victory.

Premise & Central Conflict

The series, which ran on Zee TV from August 14, 2006, through May 28, 2009, centers on Vidya, a kind-hearted but illiterate young woman from Varanasi who is exploited by her uncle, aunt, and cousin, all of whom deny her any education. Her life changes when Rajendra Pratap Singh, a Delhi businessman, selects her as a bride for his son Sagar. On their wedding day, Vidya learns that Sagar suffered a catastrophic car accident six months earlier, leaving him with the mental capacity of a child. The couple's adjustment is further complicated by Sindoora, Sagar's stepsister, who orchestrated the original accident to seize family property. Sindoora, backed by her younger sisters Mahua and Chandra, relentlessly tries to drive Vidya out of the household. Despite these hostile forces, Vidya gradually wins the affection of those around her, including Sagar himself, while Aniket, Sindoora's ex-husband, and his young son Bharat become unlikely allies.

Season 1 Arc & Tragic Climax

The first season escalates through a series of schemes by Sindoora, who introduces Surili, a woman claiming to carry Sagar's child, in a bid to undermine Vidya's position. Though Surili is eventually exposed, her attempt to implicate Sindoora in the original accident falls on deaf ears. A turning point arrives when the couple learns a Singapore-based physician can restore Sagar's mind. The surgery succeeds, but Sagar emerges with no memory of the accident or his marriage, and Sindoora exploits this gap to turn him against Vidya. The couple eventually reconciles and remarry. Tensions peak when Aniket shields Sagar from another assassination attempt, leaving him paralyzed, and Sindoora frames him for the original crash, sending him to prison. Sagar's aunt Gayatri, who knows the truth, urges Vidya to become literate. After Sagar uncovers Sindoora's crimes, the couple gathers evidence, but Sindoora tracks them to a cliff and shoots both of them dead. Before dying, Sagar insists their story is far from over, and they manage to conceal their proof. Young Bharat, learning his mother is the killer, flees the family home.

Season 2: Reincarnation & Redemption

Twenty-one years after their deaths, Sagar and Vidya return as Amar and Divya, their economic circumstances reversed: Amar is born into poverty as the son of Mahua and her husband Rajeev, while Divya grows up as a wealthy, modern woman in London. Rajeev, having overheard a priest's ominous prediction about Sindoora, swaps Amar with a boy named Samrat to protect him. Amar becomes a spirited tour guide in Varanasi, the same city where his previous incarnation first met Sagar. Divya, engaged to Samrat, travels to Delhi, where the Singh family is stunned by her uncanny resemblance to Vidya. Amar and Divya cross paths in Varanasi, and Divya experiences unexplained flashbacks of a life she cannot place. As their romance deepens, both eventually recover memories of their past lives. They reunite with the now-adult Bharat, who recognizes them as Sagar and Vidya reborn. The three join forces to finally bring Sindoora to justice, and the series concludes with their hard-won victory.

Cast & Character Dynamics

Divyanka Tripathi anchors the series in dual roles, portraying both Vidya and her reincarnation Divya, while Sharad Malhotra embodies Sagar and Amar across the two seasons. Kamya Panjabi delivers a sustained villain performance as Sindoora, appearing across the vast majority of the 700-episode run. The supporting ensemble is substantial: Surinder Kaur plays Uma, Sagar's mother and the stepsisters' stepmother, throughout the entire series, while Rajesh Balwani portrays Aniket, the well-meaning ex-husband whose loyalty to Vidya ultimately costs him his freedom and his mobility. Jaya Bhattacharya appears as Gayatri, Sagar's aunt, during a pivotal mid-season stretch. The younger Bharat is played by Shyam Sharma before Mohit Malik takes over the role as the adult. Mahua is portrayed by two actresses across the seasons, and Chandramukhi's arc is shared between Addite Shirwaikar and Shweta Dadhich.
