The story follows Urano Motosu, a book-loving post-secondary college student and soon-to-be librarian who is crushed to death beneath a pile of books during an earthquake. With her dying breath, she wishes to be reincarnated in a world where she can read books. She awakens in the body of a five-year-old girl named Myne in a world where books are scarce and only available to elites. Retaining her memories from her previous life, Myne decides to create and print her own books so that she can read again.

Ascendance of a Bookworm is significant for its detailed world-building and focus on the process of book-making in a medieval fantasy setting. The series has sold over 11 million copies across physical and digital sales combined as of July 20, 2024. It ranked first in 2018 and 2019 in Takarajimasha's annual light novel guide book Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! in the tankōbon category, and was later added to its Hall of Fame. The manga adaptation was ranked seventh at the third Next Manga Awards in the web category in 2017. The second season of the anime was nominated for Best Fantasy in 2021's Crunchyroll Anime Awards. The story began as a free web novel on Shōsetsuka ni Narō, serialized from September 2013 through March 2017 under the pen name Miya Kazuki. The title, which translates to 'I'll Stop at Nothing to Become a Librarian,' immediately signals the protagonist's singular obsession. After its online run concluded, TO Books picked up the property and launched print publication in their TO Bunko line in January 2015, with illustrations by You Shiina. The series stretched across thirty-three volumes over nearly nine years, with the final volume landing in December 2023. The narrative is structured into five distinct parts, each covering a new phase of the protagonist's life. For English-speaking readers, J-Novel Club handled the translation, releasing the full run between May 2019 and September 2024. Beyond the main series, Kazuki continued the world with a sequel following Hannelore, Myne's close friend, through her fifth year at the Royal Academy, which also debuted as a web novel before receiving print treatment.

Rather than waiting for someone else to provide her with stories, she sets out to manufacture and print books herself, using whatever resources a child in a medieval-style society can scrape together. This one decision—to become her own publisher—drives the entire sprawling narrative forward.

Manga Adaptation & Multi-Artist Expansion

The manga adaptation has become a multi-artist, multi-year undertaking that mirrors the light novel's five-part structure. Part 1, subtitled 'If there aren't any books, I'll just have to make some!', was drawn by Suzuka and ran in Comic Corona from October 2015 to July 2018, collecting into seven tankōbon volumes. Suzuka returned for Part 2, 'I'll even join the temple to read books!', which serialized from September 2018 through September 2025 and compiled into thirteen volumes. Part 3, 'Let's spread books through the duchy!', shifted to artist Ryo Namino and had already reached ten volumes, while Part 4, 'I want to save the Royal Academy's library!', was handled by Hikaru Katsuki with eleven volumes. Part 5, back with Suzuka, began serialization in January 2026. A spin-off set at Ferdinand's house also appeared under Part 3. The Hannelore sequel manga, illustrated by Rei Kusakabe, launched in September 2025. J-Novel Club publishes the manga in English as well.

Anime Adaptation: A Multi-Studio Journey

The anime adaptation has been a slow, multi-studio journey spanning over six years. Ajiado handled the first three seasons under director Mitsuru Hongo, with character designs by Yoshiaki Yanagida and Toshihisa Kaiya, and music by Michiru. Season 1 (14 episodes, October–December 2019) covered Part 1, 'Daughter of a Soldier.' A two-part OVA, numbered 14.5, aired in March 2020 with episodes about Eustachius's incognito outing and a visit to Missus Corinna. Season 2 (12 episodes, April–June 2020) and Season 3 (10 episodes, April–June 2022) together covered Part 2, 'Apprentice Shrine Maiden.' Each season featured distinct theme songs performed by different vocalists, from Sumire Morohoshi to Nao Tōyama and Maaya Sakamoto. In a notable shift, the fourth season—covering Part 3, 'Adopted Daughter of an Archduke'—was announced in December 2023 and handed to Wit Studio, with Yoshiaki Iwasaki taking the director's chair and Aiko Minowa as the new character designer, while the original cast reprised their roles. It premiered in April 2026.
