Kumkum – Ek Pyara Sa Bandhan (pronounced [ˈkʊmkʊm eːk ˈpjɑːɾɑː sɑː ˈbəndʱən]; transl. A Lovely Bond) is an Indian television series that aired on Star Plus from 15 July 2002 to 13 March 2009. The lead roles of Sumeet and Kumkum were played by Hussain Kuwajerwala and Juhi Parmar, respectively. The show was produced by BAG films.
The story centers on the Wadhwa family and their daughter-in-law, Kumkum. She is happily married to Jatin, but he dies of a brain tumor while she is pregnant. The Wadhwas arrange for her to marry a man named Vishal, but the wedding is called off at the last moment. To save her from social disgrace, Jatin’s younger brother Sumeet impulsively marries her. Sumeet feels guilty for marrying her against her will, but Kumkum eventually falls deeply in love with him while trying to expose his ex-girlfriend Renuka. The plot follows their growing romance and Kumkum’s role as the ideal daughter-in-law protecting the family through hardships. An impostor named Manik, who bears Jatin’s face, causes trouble, but Kumkum exposes him and reunites with Sumeet. She later gives birth to their children: Dhruv, Sharman, and Aashka.
Twenty years later, the story continues with Sumeet and Kumkum’s grown children: Dhruv, Sharman, and Aashka. Kumkum works to keep harmony in the family. Dhruv’s wife Antara schemes to take over the Wadhwa property, but Sumeet and Kumkum reveal her true nature to Dhruv. Sharman, in love with Neeti, gets engaged to her, but when Dhruv refuses to accept Siya on his wedding day due to his feelings for Antara, Sharman impulsively marries Siya. Siya initially vents her frustration but eventually forgives Sharman and confesses her love. Sumeet and Kumkum are happy to see the family settled. However, Pulkit, a former stalker of Kumkum, conspires to kill Sumeet. The shot misses Sumeet but kills Kumkum. Sumeet punishes Pulkit and then kills himself, unable to bear the separation.
The show concluded with Sumeet and Kumkum’s deaths, and no reincarnation storyline followed — the 20-year leap earlier in the series involved the same characters aging, not being reborn.
