Premise

A mysterious virus of unknown origin has overwhelmed Earth in the near future. After an initial outbreak in Scotland, the contagion spread worldwide. Infected humans transform into fast, savage, feral creatures called "mooks" that attack the uninfected. Mooks possess high endurance and speed, and can only be stopped by heavy gunfire or shots to the head. They are extremely sensitive to ultraviolet light, which burns them, so they hide during the day and hunt at night. To protect the population, a totalitarian government in the United Kingdom imposed a curfew: anyone caught outside between 7pm and 7am faces quarantine or worse. Major cities like London and Manchester built walls and checkpoints to control the public and limit the virus's spread, and bridges across the Thames close during curfew hours. Since mooks respond to certain subsonic frequencies, these sounds are used to lure them away from populated areas. The virus spreads only through biting; scratches cause discomfort and mild nausea that passes within hours, but do not lead to infection, and the virus is not airborne. Once bitten, a person mutates quickly and painfully, and killing the infected before they fully turn is considered an act of mercy. Unknown to the public, the virus is actually man-made. It was originally designed for medical research into cellular regeneration but mutated unexpectedly during the first human trials in Scotland, and the outbreak resulted from failed containment. The series follows a few lucky groups offered the chance to compete in an illegal 1000-kilometer street race. The finish line offers the ultimate prize: sanctuary.
