Cast
Brian Tyree Henry portrays Ray Driscoll, a recovering addict and former drug dealer who, with his friend Manny, robs dealers to support themselves. Wagner Moura plays Manny Carvalho, Ray's childhood friend who plans to settle down with girlfriend Sherry. Marin Ireland appears as Mina, a DEA agent posing as a drug cook who survives a bullet to the throat during a botched robbery. Amir Arison is Mark Nader, a DEA supervisor in Philadelphia. Production
In August 2022, Apple TV+ announced Sinking Spring, a series written by Peter Craig based on Dennis Tafoya's novel Dope Thief, with Brian Tyree Henry starring. Ridley Scott was set to direct the pilot and executive produce. Casting announcements followed, including Michael Mando, Marin Ireland, and Kate Mulgrew. Amir Arison was cast in January 2023, with Ving Rhames, Dustin Nguyen, and Nesta Cooper added the next month. Kiều Chinh was cast in March. Filming began in February 2023 in Philadelphia. After an on-set altercation, Mando was fired and replaced by Wagner Moura. Filming halted on May 9 due to the Writers Guild of America strike. In November 2024, the title changed to Dope Thief, with the first two episodes premiering March 14, 2025.

On Rotten Tomatoes, Dope Thief holds an 87% approval rating from 52 reviews, with an average rating of 7.1/10. The critics consensus notes that Brian Tyree Henry and Wagner Moura elevate a derivative story, making the thriller a riveting ride. Metacritic assigned a score of 73 out of 100 based on 27 critics, indicating generally favorable reviews.
