Critical response
Safe has received positive reviews. On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes it holds a 71% approval rating based on 24 reviews. British newspapers The Daily Telegraph and The Guardian both found Michael C. Hall's English accent odd and considered it a metaphor for the series' peculiarities, yet they also found many elements entertaining. Ed Power of The Daily Telegraph wrote that Harlan Coben makes every character feel plausibly sinister and includes skillfully crafted cliff-hangers, noting the central mystery is assembled with a watchmaker's eye. Sam Wollaston of The Guardian observed that what initially seemed like Netflix's Broadchurch soon resembled Desperate Housewives, adding that he enjoyed the people without caring about them. Maureen Ryan of Variety praised the series as a highly watchable, semi-pulpy serial with good core casting. Ben Travers of IndieWire graded it a B, calling it a fun diversion that does not overwork itself. Daniel Fienberg of The Hollywood Reporter, reviewing only the first two episodes, criticized Hall's accent and performance as well as the depiction of teens, questioning whether the payoff would be worth it.
