Premise

The series centers on the Fairburn family in an edgy Lancashire town where vigilante justice is growing. Three siblings work in law enforcement: brothers Chrissie and Ray are police officers, and sister Beth is a lawyer. Their widowed father Lenny, a retired police officer, struggles with Alzheimer's disease and resents his children's modern methods. Ray and Chrissie serve in a five-person Criminal Investigation Department team alongside the solitary Robert, the newest recruit Lucy, and the volatile family man Joe. The murder of a 12-year-old girl heightens existing tensions and pushes the community toward revenge. As the investigation proceeds, the officers take increasingly dangerous steps. Beth becomes the defense lawyer for the principal suspect, Jason Buliegh, and two officers eventually go too far.

Background

The BBC described Conviction as a drama exploring the idea that everyone has the ability to kill and what triggers that reaction, using the CID world as a backdrop to show how characters are affected practically, mentally, and emotionally by their daily work. It also addresses the resilience and humor of family and friends dealing with psychological fallout. The drama uses multiple flashbacks and fast-forwards, interlinking time and blurring the line between reality and fantasy. Executive producer Nicola Shindler recalled that Bill Gallagher came up with a basic idea about an incident involving two policemen that severely affects their work and home life, from which they developed the concept of a family working in the police station. She described Conviction as more of a 'whydunnit' than a 'whodunnit,' examining people's psyche and challenging the idea of clear good and evil. Gallagher stated he wanted to write a police drama that would thrill and disturb him, taking characters to places they were scared to go. He aimed for a daring and confrontational approach, using narrative techniques to build tension and keep the story moving at a real pace. The series is not based on any particular crime or case but on how people react when awful crimes happen, reflecting what Gallagher felt was in the air during angry times.
